We Miss You Mercury
The recently released "Bohemian Rhapsody", a production that reviews the history of the famous singer Freddie Mercury and his legendary band Queen, debuted in US theaters with a collection of 50 million dollars. The film starring Rami Malek, who plays the leader of the British band, stood as the second-best premiere for a musical biography, after the 60.2 million dollars of "Straight Outta Compton" in 2015.
The long-awaited film has a rather superficial look at the success and decline of the rock star. Even so, it delivers deep musical moments that make you remember the best days of the popular band. Those who expected a deep version of the life of Freddie Mercury will probably be disappointed because the film has a superficial treatment of several aspects of the life of the legendary rock star.
The film does not delve into the bad times of Mercury, has a very superficial view of the birth of Queen, does not address enough the homosexuality of the singer and that AIDS is treated as a minor issue.
In spite of the many conversations that the actor Rami Malek had with the friends and relatives of Mercury to build-up the character, he said that the only way to connect with the deceased singer was through his lyrics. He studied them as a diary. "Mercury was pouring all his heart into those songs, the lyrics are capricious, ethereal, painful. The man was very complicated, he was looking for love all his life, and you can hear it." Rami Malec
The critics say that Rami Malek, achieves a brilliant and electrifying work, shaking his body on the stage with an incredible confidence that immediately brings the memory of the essence of the Queen vocalist.
What stands out to me is that, for a man so controversial and relevant in the history of music, they have not invested everything necessary to build a holistic character based on reality. They have just missed a great opportunity to share what Mercury was facing in his personal life during his musical career. I'm sure the audience would have been grateful if we had made an effort to understand what he was going through. I believe its hard to dive into these dark realities because the industry around the idol starts to crack. We prefer to stay with the good part of the story. We have become so shallow and lack of realism.
Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I feel that it's like taking advantage of those we have lost, (for sure in real life people did so) not engaging with the whole persona and not being able to celebrate and cry together in spite of their failures and odds. We have lost so many amazing artists. How many more are we going to let go? I challenge my self to embrace those that I bump into and love them just as they are. Maybe this acceptance can change their realities if my love is a commitment a not just a tap on the shoulder. I challenge myself to love more radically to those who are in a real mess and take responsibility.
By the way, I understand as a producer that we can't say it all in a story. We have to take desitions and put boundaries. I also understand that movies are merely entertainment. It just breaks my heart that Mercury is not with us and that we can't tell him how much we miss him and love his songs.

Some critics have taken issue with the fact that Bohemian Rhapsody sanitizes Mercury’s image. Malek said, “The fact of the matter, that he would freely admit, was that one of Freddie Mercury’s hobbies was sex. He was very promiscuous.” The goal of this movie was to celebrate the man and not get lost with certain elicit aspects of his life. The production focused on the authentic, defiant, revolutionary human being Mercury was and is...
