Christianity Transformed The World
Since the early Church, Christianity contributed to the area of human dignity and the sacredness of human life by teaching that all humans are equal in dignity and that this dignity and human value comes from being created in the image and likeness of God.
Through Constantine (AD 280—337), a Roman Emperor, inspired by the teachings of the apostles, influenced the enactment of a series of laws that represents the values and morality of the actual Christian Church. First, he dealt with the weakest:
Children, women + slaves
In the year 314 AD, the regional council of Ancira issued a categorical condemnation of abortion practices. In this and other questions, the early Church will influence even the barbarian peoples, who invade and destroy the Western Roman Empire between 406 and 476.
In 315AD, a law to prevent the use of the right of the father over the life and death of the children was constituted.
In 318AD, was established that infanticide was a crime.
The situation of the slaves was attended, facilitating their liberation and dignifying their condition.
A new legal framework recognized the right to receive legacies and donations to develop assistance work with the groups most in need of society. Since then a traditional custom has been established: the rich donate goods to the Church and the latter channels them to meet the needs of the poor.
Laws against gladiatorial fights and other bloody spectacles were also enacted.
The death penalty was forbidden on the cross. The pagan sanctuaries whose practices were scandalous and offensive to Christian morality were suppressed.
Christianity also had a great impact on the nature of sex, marriage, and the family influenced thanks to Paul’s teachings on sexual morality. The unity of man and woman, and that this marriage bond was sacred and indissoluble.
Women were no longer treated as objects and sex was no longer used in a distorted way, but there was now a profound sense of love that was present, by a total self-giving of both husband and wife.
Measures were taken against adultery, abduction or prostitution, and divorce was severely restricted.
There were scientists that believed that the world was created by a reasonable God, they were not surprised to discover that people could find out something true about nature and the universe on the basis of reason. And because they had this foundation, they could move with confidence, expecting to be able to find out about the world by observation and experimentation.
This was their epistemological base, the philosophical foundation which they were sure they could know. They knew there was a correlation between themselves as observers and the thing observed, between subject and object.
Despite Thomas Aquinas had an incomplete understanding of the fall, he showed to the world that faith and reason were, in fact, compatible with each other. For what was theologically true had to be true in terms of sound reason. He proved theological truth and reason go together.
Through the influence of Christianity in the Roman Catholic came to us the development of western law and modern legal traditions that go back as far as Medieval Europe.
The last main contribution which Christianity brought was education and specifically higher education when it comes to the University. King Charlemagne who “strongly encouraged education and the arts, calling upon the bishops to organize schools around their cathedrals. Through this Carolingian Renaissance that various educational innovations and improvements were made. The society of this time was greatly educated in many matters but without access to The Truth that makes that everything makes sense aligning purpose and significance why all things are created and exist.
Through the Carolingian Renaissance that we derived a new improvement in writing known as Carolingian minuscule that helped create the concept of upper and lower case lettering, as well as the concept of spaces between words. Before, reading a manuscript was very difficult. The fact was that there was only one-case lettering, and there was also no spaces between words.
There is no other movement that has influenced and transformed the whole world since the early times more than Christianity. Either through their countercultural ways of life, such as extraordinary acts of charity that contrasted with the ancient pagan world or through intellectual achievements such as the use of faith and reason, in the development of education and the university.
But because the origin of the Catholic Church is the tragic compromise of Christianity with the pagan religions that surrounded it (the beliefs of the Roman Empire). Instead of proclaiming the gospel and converting the pagans, the Catholic Church “Christianized” the pagan religions and “paganized” Christianity. True Christianity doesn't approve crusades or idolatry of any kind. Similar to the Christian Faith of today that falls short in so many ways as well. Today the whole Church is being challenged by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures to align our sound doctrines to The Truth in love and in Unity. We can see many movements that are taking us to the heart of God and out of religion.
500 years ago "The Reformation" played a key role in human history freeing the people from the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church because there was no access to The Truth, the Word of God. Once more, and this time, way deeper, there was a before and an after in the western world because the reformers of the 16the-century enthroned Truth, above them selfs and other religions.
We believe that there has never been so many Christian all around the world. There are miracles, signs, and wonders like never before. But since the Reformation, we don´t see the Kingdom of God play successfully visible over the spheres or culturally. Just a shadow and glimpses when we put the Truth in action.
Many believe that the biggest revival and reformation has already begun! There is a posture of repentance, of hunger for Jesus like never before. Nothing can satisfy the people of God but seek his face day and night and are willing to respond to the high calling whatever it takes.
Coming up soon the impact of The Reformers!!
