Let's Fill The Gap

Rosa Maria Da Cruz (50 years old) hid her daughter Séréna for almost 2 years from her husband and 3 children in the dirty boot of a Peugeot 307. Séréna was discovered by Guillaume Iguacel, a mechanic who heard noises while repairing Cruz's car in 2013. Séréna had also been kept in an unused room in the family's house in the Corrèze region, in central France.

Today, the 7-year-old girl suffers from a disability and has autistic features, which were caused by sensory deprivation, according to the experts who examined her. The girl, who does not speak or socialize, is in an orphanage.

The defense attorneys argued that Cruz showed "a denial of pregnancy," since, according to them, she never accepted the fact of having a fourth child.

Da Cruz said she saw Séréna as "one thing" until the baby was 18 months old, when he smiled at her. "Sometimes I forgot to feed her for days." Da Cruz

Da Cruz was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but 3 of them were suspended. According to the court, this ruling will allow him to educate his other three children. "The court wanted to take into account his background and this decision can disappoint many," said the judge. The judge also ordered permanent custody of Séréna to be withdrawn. Da Cruz will be monitored by social services for 5 years and will receive psychiatric treatment.

This is Serena's story, but how many more stories are happening around the world at this precise moment? I am concerned about the lack of visible help for women and men who face all kind of difficulties and confusing situations that are attracted to crime instead of seeking help. It is unacceptable what this woman did, but how many more horror stories are we going to hear? Unwanted babies and children should have a refuge to go whenever is necessary.

I really believe that if the current Adoption Agencies and Organizations make a better communication strategy to persuade women who want to abort and/or cannot take charge, to enter into dialogue and presume them to contemplate the idea of giving their children for adoption, the abortion and crime rates would go down. It is necessary to more effectively reach society and educate that babies and children, no matter in what condition, will always be deeply desired and loved.

I understand that we can not do much about people with mental illness, but we can fill the gap that exists around the world, with more advertising campaigns, education, and awareness of the unlimited value for the unborn, childhood and adolescence. Our future is in their hands, and it is our responsibility to take care of their lives as they develop and grow, integrating them into families, which constitute the central foundation of society.
